As a clueless new mom and one who likes to try products out myself as opposed to hearsay from others, I recently received and reviewed my first bluum subcription box. Even with my mixed review, I'm going to keep with it a few more months since it's a small price to pay to find great products I may not have otherwise heard of.
Needless to say, I'm liking the concept of product samples by mail for now, but I hope the novelty doesn't wear off. While bluum has products for both mom and baby, I was also craving some samples that would be mine all mine. Enter MyGlam.com.
Upon hearing some mixed reviews about Birchbox, I decided to do a bit of research on other beauty sample boxes. After assessing my options, I settled on MyGlam.com for $10 per month with free shipping.
So my first box came about a week and a half ago. And by "box," of course I mean a hot pink bubble wrap envelope that I've most definitely seen at Target. I guess they are thinking outside the box. Literally.
Inside the padded envelope was a beautiful gold glittered clutch makeup case (that thankfully didn't get all over everything I was wearing) and the following contents:
1 // Living Proof Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream, 8 oz, $36
This stuff smelled delicious but with hair as thick and curly as mine I'm always skeptical of products that claim to banish frizz. I used it twice this weekend in the crazy Chicago humidity and so far haven't noticed much of an improvement with my flyaways and frizzies. Their website does claim the product gets more effective over time, but I don't think I'll get many more uses out of the sample size. But at least my hair will smell incredible over the next few days (for me to sit in my house alone with a six month old, of course).
2 // NYX Round Lipstick, $4
This lipstick allegedly has conditioning agents that smooth lips, yet the color is not supposed to fade off. That seems kind of strange, right? Silky lipsticks come off right away usually. Well, this one indeed came off right away...but only because I took it off. I received the "Iced Honey" shade and I looked like a Spice Girl circa 1997. Zig-a-zig-ahhhhh. I would have much preferred a pink, coral or red color from them. But I'm a gloss kinda gal anyway. I will admit that it did feel like more of a smooth gloss than a sticky lipstick, so maybe I should try another shade.
3 // Philosophy Take a Deep Breath Oil-Free Energizing Oxygen Gel Cream Moisturizer, 2 oz, $34
Ok, try saying that three times fast. But they had me at oil-free. Actually, they had me at Philosophy because I adore their products (especially their fragrance...that's a hint Philosophy public relations team, in case you're reading this). I used this lotion two nights in a row and it honestly does make my skin feel softer. I probably only have about one application left but once my other oil-free creams at home run out, this is definitely on my list.
4 // Marbella Permanent Eyeliner Pen, $19
Oh my goodness, I am in love. This pen is seriously the best kind of "liquid eyeliner" I've ever used. I always have so much trouble with the brushes and jars, but this was so simple to apply and glided on so smoothly. It stayed on all night. A little too well as I still saw remnants in the morning even after using an eye makeup remover and face wash. But I still give this product two thumbs up, especially considering this was a full-sized product sample. Score!
A couple times I looked back inside the envelope to make sure I wasn't missing anything because there was no marketing material from MyGlam. No slip saying "welcome." Nothing indicated what these products were. Nada...and with a Master's degree in marketing and communications this really irked me and would tick me off if I was one of their featured products.
What I did find was that if I log onto their website, they have some information about the products along with discount codes if you want to buy the full-sized product. They also mention there that this June box was their "Out All Night" themed kit, but I never would've known just from receiving my package.
Overall verdict: I dig. Keep it coming, MyGlam. Just please don't send me any more frosted brownish lipsticks, okay?
